Inspector
With the character of the inspector, I knew that I must have
to stick with a Scottish accent as the second act is based in Scotland.
Surprisingly I found it a lot easier to speak in the Scottish accent than I
originally thought, weirdly enough I listened to songs or interviews with Scottish
musicians and it helped me pronounce some words correctly or get the accent
better.
McQuarrie
For the voice of Mr McQuarrie, I tensed the muscles in my
neck and would slowly prevent any air going through which makes this weird suffocating
sound and I mixed it up with the Scottish accent and surprisingly enough, they
both went together really well. Also when my character would mumble I was allowing
all the trapped air to release and just emphasise the noise that I was making.
Heavy
Just like the inspector, I wanted the heavy to just have a
straight Scottish accent as I suppose that with this character he isn’t going
to be too young however he isn’t going to be too old either. So having the
accent without any additional features in my views would work well.
Mrs Mcgarrigle
This character was a rather interesting one to perform with
and especially for my voice because of the amount of shouting or projecting
that is used. One thing that I had to be carefull with the shouting is that I didn’t
do any damage to my vocal chords and also to make sure that I didn’t do it too
often. Being able to project was rather key with this character because there
is so much comedic dialogue in if I wasn’t loud enough, the audience would have
heard it. Also another point with my voice and this character is that I tried
to have a more gentle approach to show that she is really sweet and rather
innocent towards anyone and everyone except for her husband Willie.
Mr Memory
Mr Memory’s voice was possibly the straighter forward for
any voice that I had to use in the play. It was very English and had to be very
melodramatic and very over the top with the language. I also had to project a
lot but that was because there would be elongated words like “Thankooooooo” and
it needed to be said louder. Also I had to try and perform it the exact same
way as Carl due to the fact that he played Mr Memory in the first act and so
for the audience to realise that, I needed to play it the same and say it the
exact same.
