Characterisation  

Inspector

For the inspector at the beginning of Act 2, I wanted to play him so that he roughly wants to impress the sheriff and also professor Jordan but also so that he doesn’t really know what’s going on and just does what he is told to do. I also wanted to play him so that he comes across as if he knows what he is doing and that he is prepared to do anything that the sheriff asks of him.

Mcquarrie

I personally love playing Mr Mcquarrie as I feel like I can really be over the top with most of my actions such as just normally walking. I’ve decided that to show I’ll be playing an old person, I’ll have some sort of stick to walk with and hunch over as it’s like a stereotype that goes with with the older generation. And I felt as if it would be funny to show that as an old man he gets really nervous so in the middle of saying an opening speech he does this weird mumble and only says some words from the speech.

Heavy 

As far as the ‘Heavy’ characters are concerned, I wanted to play mine as a fairly slapstick character yet still having the characteristics of trying to demonstrate his authority yet still be a clumsy character and also a character who is incapable of doing his own work and that he needs to be told or shown what he has to do.  One thing that I think is hard with playing this sort of character is that it can easily be overdone and that it can then kill the joke. However I feel that what I have in mind for this character is going to be funny and that it won’t be a ‘joke killer’.   

Mrs Mcgarrigle

For the character of Mrs Mcgarrigle, I like the fact that her character is played by the opposite gender and that she is the ‘dominant’ partner in her relationship meaning that she has Mr Mcgarrigle under her thumb and if he does something wrong or something that she doesn’t agree with, she’ll shout his name really loud. I think that even though she loves him, she enjoys shouting at him as he is probably a character that is rather old and hasn’t got the best memory and is rather slow. Also another characteristic that I find really amusing with Mrs Mcgarrigle is that she is rather pervy for an old lady (trying to take off Pamela’s skirt) and I think that when you have a male playing as her, it really adds the comedy and the humour to the character.

Mr Memory

The character of Mr Memory was rather funny and rather interesting. He likes to be able to perform and really show off his talent for remembering so many interesting and odd facts about anything. He’s definitely someone that really enjoys doing what he does and also he knows that he can make a lot of money out of doing what he does. I also think that his character is rather brave seeing as he is shot whilst on stage and that he remains slightly calm and doesn’t give in to death until he has told everyone about the 39 steps.
