Pace and Energy
For the show of the 39 Steps, it’s a very fast paced show
and also rather melodramatic and as a group we wanted to show this in the best
way without going too over the top and killing any possible jokes. For our
first scene which is the Sheriff and inspector we had rehearsed it at a normal
pace and as if it was like an interview of some sort. However, very quickly we
had some ideas that we thought would be comedic and so decided to put them in
and when showing the other group, we received positive feedback so we knew
quickly that we had got that scene right. I feel that with this play it was
funny at parts because the pace is so fast and when there was a part that meant
it was going slow it would add some sort of comedy value to it. When rehearsing
the scenes that I’m in (Clown 1 or 2) I actually found that I would become
rather hot and tired quickly just because of the amount of energy that you need
to put into it. To me it felt as if it was good sign because I felt as if I was
doing it right and the way it should be done.
Personally I also feel as if the Pace and Energy need to go
together with this play on the basis that you can’t really pull it off if you
don’t have either of them. Even with one missing, it would be a different show
completely and the comedy values would probably be meaningless and also
pointless.
